The work
Prior to parish councils being
established the countryside was administered by Ecclesiastical and 'Poor Law'
Parishes. The Church collected Tithes and the 'Poor Law' Parishes levied a 'Poor
Rate'.
During the 1880's several Parliamentary Acts were passed dividing the
Ecclesiastical Parishes, merging and reforming them. Following the 'Local
Government Act of 1894,' Misson Parish Council was established. In
accordance with its population seven local Parish Councillors are elected. A part
time professional clerk is employed to advise council and manage the day to day business.

Parish Council
The Misson
parish is one of
four that form the 'Everton Ward' the other three parishes
being Gringley on the Hill, Scaftworth and Everton. The Electoral
Register for Misson 2009/10 lists 275 residencies and shows 546 persons entitled to
vote.
Misson Parish Council has seven elected Parish Councillors. Each year the Chairman
is publically elected by a majority vote of the elected Councillors. Another is elected as Deputy Chairman. Parish councils are empowered to raise a
local tax called a 'Precept'. Nowadays the Precept is collected together with
the Local Council Tax but is set by each individual Parish as it requires. For
the year 2010/11 the Parish Precept was set at £8,500 against a budget of £11,275.00.
The balance of expenditure is made up of annual grants and other sources
sometimes available.
The aim of this
council is to maintain the standards required of a quality Parish Council. The
council aims to openly
represent the parish interests fairly, honestly and effectively to the best of its ability.
The Parish Council also recognises its responsibility to support the charities
and groups within the parish.
The Village Green
The Village Green is in trust to the Parish
Council. The Village Green may not be fenced off or
restrictions of any kind be made that restrict access. However, the Parish
Council may approve some modifications
such as; paths, seating and planting of trees to the benefit of everyone.
The
Parish Council owns the Community Centre, the Cemetery and is the Trustee of the
Village Green. The council also maintains
the Church Graveyard and provides an annual subsidy to the maintenance of the
church clock. Nottinghamshire County Council cuts most of the grass verges of the village
but some is undertaken by the parish. The council also maintains a close interest in the activities of the
local charities and voluntary groups and provides support.
The
Community Centre is leased to the Community Association at a peppercorn rent.
The day
to day management of the Community Centre is also undertaken by the
Misson Community Association which is a registered charity.
The council meets monthly at 19:30hrs on the first Wednesday of each month
within the Peter Wild Room, Misson Community Centre, Vicar Lane. The meetings
are public. The council doesn't normally meet in August and some years may delay the
January meeting until the 2nd Wednesday of that month. Members of the public may speak to the meeting or ask questions
prior to the formal procedures commencing.
The business of the council is to manage
the affairs of the parish, comment on planning
applications and act as a liaison between the parishioners and various public
bodies such as, Bassetlaw District Council;
Environment, Planning, Refuse
collection, Nottinghamshire County Council;
Highways, Police,
Fire Brigade. The
Parish Council is also the Trustee to the Town Estate Charity.
The council is a member of the National Association of Local Councils (NALC ),
North East Bassetlaw Forum (NEBF), an association of local Parish councils. The
parish is represented on the Doncaster Robin Hood Airport through its membership
of NEBF.
