By statute it is required of all planning authorities that 'planning applications' must first be referred to local councils such as parish and town councils for comment before making a decision. The Parish Council is not able to approve or reject any planning applications. It's roll is to comment on any applications when it considers appropriate. Sometimes the Parish Council may consider a development so important that it will go beyond a comment and positively support or oppose an application. Each Councillor is required to declare a 'Personal' or 'Prejudicial Interest' when considering the submissions put before them and may be required to leave the room prior to discussion and a vote taking place. The types of application that come before the council are; New Houses and housing developments Extensions to existing properties Modifications of Listed buildings Erection of boundary walls and fences Removal of trees Change of use Extraction of minerals (such as sand and gravel) Industrial Practices that require a License
